Porsche Was About To Make Their Biggest SUV Fully Electric…

Now It Might Come With A V8.

So remember when every automaker said:

“We’re going fully electric by 2030.”

Yeah… about that.

Porsche was originally planning to release a massive, all-electric flagship SUV — something that would sit above the Cayenne as the brand’s new top-tier luxury performance family hauler.

This thing had a code name too:

K1

And originally?

It was supposed to be:

  • Fully electric
  • EV-only platform
  • No gas engine option
  • The future of Porsche SUVs

Basically:

A Taycan… but built like a tank.

But now?

That plan might be completely off the menu.

Porsche Just Hit The “Actually Nevermind” Button

According to recent reports, Porsche is rethinking the entire direction of this flagship SUV due to what they’re calling:

“New realities.”

Which is corporate-speak for:

EV demand isn’t growing as fast as we thought. People hate this EV garbage.

Infrastructure still isn’t fully there

Customers still like engines

And regulations are complicated

So instead of making this upcoming SUV EV-only…

Porsche is now considering:

  • A V6
  • A Plug-In Hybrid
  • And yes…
  • V8

That’s right.

Their next “electric future” flagship SUV…

Might literally run on dinosaur juice with a fire-breathing V8. We personally hope this is the case because the 958.1 and 958.2 V8 powered vehicles were not only a treat to drive, but also proper reliable workhorses overall.

It’s Basically Becoming A Bigger Cayenne

Originally, this K1 SUV was going to sit on its own dedicated EV platform.

Now?

It’s expected to share architecture with Audi’s upcoming Q9 — meaning it’ll likely support traditional internal combustion engines alongside hybrid systems.

So instead of:

A fully electric next-gen luxury SUV

We’re getting something closer to:

A mega-Cayenne with optional electrification

And honestly?

That might be exactly what buyers want.

Because let’s be real:

The Cayenne basically saved Porsche from financial ruin in the late 90s and early 2000s.

SUV buyers like performance…

But they also like:

  • Range
  • Refueling in 5 minutes
  • Towing
  • Road trips
  • And not planning their life around charging stations

EV Hype vs Market Reality

A few years ago, Porsche was going all-in on electrification across:

  • Sports cars
  • Sedans
  • SUVs

But EV demand — especially in the U.S. — has started cooling off recently.

So now?

Even performance-focused brands are hedging their bets by keeping internal combustion alive longer than originally planned.

Translation:

Nobody wants to accidentally build a $120K electric SUV that people aren’t ready to fully commit to yet.

The Irony Is Kinda Funny

Think about it:

BMW is saying manuals don’t make sense anymore because of modern performance engineering…

Meanwhile Porsche might be saying:

Actually… internal combustion still makes sense.

So now we might live in a timeline where:

  • Manual transmissions disappear
  • But V8s survive longer than expected

Which honestly sounds like the most car-enthusiast-coded outcome imaginable.

The Takeaway

Porsche hasn’t officially confirmed every detail yet.

But the direction is clear:

Their next flagship SUV probably won’t be EV-only anymore.

Instead, it could launch with:

  • Gas engines
  • Hybrid options
  • Possibly a full twin-turbo V8

Meaning the future of performance SUVs might not be:

Silent

Minimalist

Fully electric

But instead:

Hybrid-assisted

Turbocharged

And still very loud

So if you thought the V8 era was ending soon?

It might just be entering its villain arc instead.
